Imaging the Subsurface Plumbing Complex of Steamboat Geyser and Cistern Spring With Hydrothermal Tremor Migration Using Seismic Interferometry

چکیده
Steamboat Geyser in Yellowstone National Park is the tallest active geyser on Earth and believed to have hydrologic connection Cistern Spring, a hydrothermal pool ?100 m southwest from vent. Despite broad scientific interest, rare episodic eruptions made it difficult study its eruption dynamics underground plumbing architecture. In response recent reactivation of Steamboat, which has produced more than 130 since March 2018, we deployed dense seismic nodal array surrounding enigmatic summer 2019. The recorded abundant 1–5 Hz tremor originating phase-transition events within both Spring. To constrain spatiotemporal distribution sources, an interferometric-based polarization analysis was developed. observed locations indicate that conduit beneath vertical extends down ?120 depth includes shallow connecting with deep, large, laterally offset reservoir ?60 southeast surface pool. No direct between structures found. temporal variation combined situ temperature water measurements reveals interaction throughout eruption/recharge cycles. delayed responses Spring reaction recharge suggest two may be connected through fractured/porous medium instead open channel, consistent our inferred structure.

The plumbing of Old Faithful Geyser revealed by hydrothermal tremor
Old Faithful Geyser in Yellowstone National Park (USA) has attracted numerous scientific investigations for over two centuries in order to better understand its geological structure, the physics of its eruptions, and the controls of its intermittency. Using data acquired with a seismic array in 1992, we track the sources of hydrothermal tremor produced by boiling and cavitation inside the geyse...

A novel imaging process, referred to as vector image isochron (VII) migration, is specifically designed to reduce artifacts caused by arrays with limited apertures. By examining the assumptions behind generalized Radon transform (GRT) migration, a new approach is found which identifies and suppresses array artifacts, based on the array geometry and the migration earth model. The new method work...

In recent years, there has been an increase in the deployment of relatively dense arrays of seismic stations. The availability of spatially densely sampled global and regional seismic data has stimulated the adoption of industry-style imaging algorithms applied to convertedand scattered-wave energy from distant earthquakes, leading to relatively high-resolution images of the lower crust and upp...
متن کاملseismic imaging of complex structures by integrating pre-stack time migration and surface stacking methods
the conventional approach to seismic data analysis consists of two main steps: estimating seismic velocities, (the subsurface macro-model), and seismic imaging, (mapping of the reflected seismic energy to the reflector positions). the aim and the major challenge in the seismic data analysis is the construction of the best undistorted image. this challenge would be more problematic when geometri...
